Tax Assistance & VITA

Expanding Access to Tax Education, Free Tax Assistance, and Financial Literacy

At Roy/Walker and Associate, we believe that financial stability begins with access to accurate information, practical education, and trusted community resources.

Tax preparation is an important part of financial literacy. Understanding how income taxes work, identifying available tax credits and deductions, maintaining appropriate records, and understanding how a tax refund can affect a household's financial situation can all contribute to stronger financial decision-making.

Our organization is developing our tax assistance and financial education services as part of our broader commitment to community education, workforce development, and access to essential financial resources.

Our Tax & Financial Education Initiative

Our Tax Assistance & VITA initiative is being developed to connect tax education with broader financial literacy and community support.

Through this initiative, we intend to provide educational opportunities that help individuals and families better understand:

  • Basic federal and state income tax concepts
  • Tax filing responsibilities
  • Tax credits and deductions
  • Income and tax documentation
  • Refunds and tax payments
  • Tax-related financial decision-making
  • Basic budgeting and financial planning
  • Financial recordkeeping
  • Identity protection and responsible handling of financial information
  • Available community and financial resources

Our long-term goal is to make tax assistance part of a broader financial-education pathway rather than treating tax preparation as an isolated service.

Preparing for VITA Participation

Roy/Walker and Associate is preparing to participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, an IRS-sponsored program that provides free tax preparation assistance through trained and certified volunteers.

VITA is designed to help underserved taxpayers, including eligible low- to moderate-income individuals and families, persons with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency.

As we prepare for participation, our organization is working toward developing the appropriate volunteer training, operational procedures, community outreach, quality-control practices, and partnerships necessary to support a responsible tax assistance program.

Our goal is to build this program carefully and sustainably so that community members can receive reliable assistance in an accessible and respectful environment.

Our VITA participation and site services will be subject to IRS program requirements, volunteer certification, available services, and applicable filing-season guidelines.

Community-Based Tax Assistance

We believe that access to tax assistance should be connected to the communities that need it.

Our developing program is intended to focus on community-based access, particularly for individuals and families who may experience barriers to obtaining affordable tax preparation or reliable financial information.

We are exploring community partnerships and accessible locations where tax education and assistance can be provided in a welcoming environment.

Our future program may include community outreach, educational workshops, volunteer opportunities, and free tax preparation services for eligible taxpayers through the VITA program.

Tax Preparation and Financial Literacy

Tax preparation can be an important starting point for broader financial education.

When individuals understand their tax return, they may also have an opportunity to better understand their income, withholding, credits, expenses, savings, and overall financial position.

For this reason, our approach connects:

Tax Education → Financial Literacy → Financial Awareness → Financial Stability

We want participants to leave with more than a completed tax return. We want them to have greater understanding of the financial information that affects their everyday lives.

Volunteer & Workforce Development

Our organization also views tax assistance as an opportunity for structured learning and workforce development.

Through appropriate training and supervision, individuals interested in community service, financial education, administration, and tax-related support may have opportunities to develop practical skills.

Potential areas of learning may include:

  • Taxpayer intake and administrative procedures
  • Document organization
  • Financial information handling
  • Community outreach
  • Tax education
  • Volunteer coordination
  • Quality-control procedures
  • Confidentiality and privacy practices
  • Professional communication
  • Community service operations

All VITA tax-return preparation activities will follow applicable IRS training, certification, privacy, confidentiality, and quality-review requirements.

Our Commitment to Quality and Confidentiality

Tax information is highly sensitive. We recognize that community members who seek assistance must be treated with professionalism, respect, and confidentiality.

As we develop our VITA-related services, we intend to establish clear procedures for:

  • Protecting taxpayer information
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Proper document handling
  • Volunteer training and certification
  • Quality review
  • Secure operational procedures
  • Appropriate taxpayer communication
  • Compliance with applicable IRS requirements

IRS VITA sites are operated by partner organizations and staffed by trained volunteers. Volunteers who prepare returns must meet IRS training and certification requirements, and returns prepared at VITA sites are subject to required quality review before filing.

Our organization is committed to building our program around these standards.

Building Community Partnerships

A successful community tax program depends on collaboration.

Roy/Walker and Associate welcomes opportunities to work with:

  • Libraries
  • Community centers
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Educational institutions
  • Workforce development organizations
  • Community-based organizations
  • Financial education partners
  • Other organizations serving underserved communities

Through partnerships, we hope to expand awareness of free tax assistance and connect tax preparation with other educational and community resources.

Looking Ahead

Our Tax Assistance & VITA initiative represents the next step in the development of our financial-literacy work.

We are preparing for the upcoming tax season by developing our knowledge, volunteer capacity, community relationships, operational procedures, and educational resources.

Over time, we hope to establish a sustainable community-based program that can:

Educate. Assist. Empower. Build.

We believe that when people have access to reliable financial information and appropriate support, they are better positioned to make informed decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Preparing for the Next Step

Roy/Walker and Associate is currently developing this initiative and preparing for participation in the VITA program.

If you are interested in:

  • Volunteering
  • Supporting our tax education initiative
